Foggy Winter Fishing On Lake Lanier

     Lately the bite on Lanier has been pretty tough, at least for me. Most people have been fishing shallow in cuts with ditches near deep water and throwing reaction baits or a shakey head. This bite has been better in the morning. When the sun gets higher, most people turn to deep timber or deep brush for their fish. I've been trying to locate schools of fish on offshore structure and dropping a drop shot or a blade bait on them. Last Saturday, there was a thick fog that covered the lake in the morning so we stayed near the boat ramp and fished some shallow ditches with a jerkbait. After the fog burned off we got to move around more safely and started fishing offshore with drop shots and blade baits, Check out the video of that day below:

Winter Fishing And Interview With The Drop Shot Jedi

I went fishing with Jimmy Harmon aka Lanier Jim aka The Drop Shot Jedi to learn how the Lake Lanier Bass are transitioning into their Winter patterns. We drop shotted most of the day and fished a jigging spoon some as well. We targeting deep cuts and deep ledges with brush. A lot of the fish we saw on Jimmy's Humminbird were suspending on the structure in 30-40ft of water. We drop shotted Wackem Big Sissy worms in both LJ's Obsession and LJ's Passion which are both fantastic colors for fishing deep. For drop shotting, I use a Denali Rosewood 6'6'' M-F Spinning Rod which is strong enough to handle big fish on light line yet sensative enough to feel the lightest bites in super deep water. October Drop Shotting With The Jedi

 I got the chance to fish with Lanier Jim this morning on his new Ranger. We started out fishing crankbaits and jigs out shallower but got nothing except a few bites.
After we got fed up with that and the sun got higher we started fishing drop shots in brush and of course, we/I started catching them. Most of the fish were about the size of the one below, yet a lot were smaller too. I was dropping L

J's Passion all day and Jimmy tried a bunch of stuff but Obsession mainly..We were targeting brush on the outside bends of creek channels. Windy Fall Drop Shotting On Lake Lanier

Fall drop shotting with Wackem Big Sissys soaked in Kick N Bass for big spotted bass. All fish came on a brushpile on a ledge in 25' of water in the mouth of a creek. For drop shotting I use a Denali Rosewood 6'6'' M-F spinning rod because of it's sensitivity as well as strength to pull big, aggressive spotted bass out of thick brush. The Rosewood I use has a wooden foregrip which to me is a great balance of comfort and sensitivity. Normally, rods with no foregrip can be very uncomfortable but having exposed blank adds sensitivity. With a cork or foam foregrip the rods may be comfortable but EVA foam and cork deaden the sensitivity. The wood is more dense and sensitive but at the same time a more natural and comfortable grip (and looks very slick).

Fall Topwater Fishing On Lake Lanier

Fishing with walking baits for schooling fall bass on Lake Lanier. I used a Paycheck Baits Repo Man in Bone Crusher and a Sammy 100 in Chrome. With topwaters I put a red treble on the fron split ring and for both baits I use a #4 Owner ST-36 round bend hook. Some of the fish are back in creeks, but there are still lots of bass on offshore structure schooling up. I am noticing that they are staying near shallower structure or near shallow water.

Great video on how to fish shakey heads. They are a great bait during the Summer-Fall transition and on into the fall. I like fishing with either a Davis HPT series head or a SpoTaker made by Lanier Baits and weights vary depending on the situation. I like to fish a Wackem Pointy tail or a Stinger Tail soaked in Kick N Bass Garlic on them.
